see tomorrow...

Almost everyone on the planet will know someone who has died from cancer but the cure will come; medical research continues to advance in it's war with this disease that plagues humanity. When you think about the impact that a cure would bring to this global problem it sends a shudder through your spine. The causes for cancer seem to be many but despite all the knowledge we gain, it is still almost impossible to know if or when a person will contract it.

There are theories that we all have it and it just takes something to start it off, but what is cancer? This is a disease where unhealthy cells grow, divide and then expand into other cells, often transferring to parts of the body using a method called metastasis.

The malignant property of cancer differentiates it from benign tumors which limit their growth and do not invade or metastasize. Some benign tumors, however, are capable of becoming malignant. Fortunately, this is a disease which is not as prevalent in the young but as you age the risk of cancer increases; it is responsible for thirteen percent of all deaths around the world. Cancerous cells may have been transformed by radiation or poison for example and this creates genetic abnormality in those cells which then continue to grow and divide.

The cause can also be the responsibility of faulty DNA replication or a genetic trait inherited from parents which means a person can be born with them. It would seem some people are more susceptible to it than others and it may be their genetic makeup and their exposure to certain carcinogens that is responsible.

Research into the cause of cancer continues around the globe and is the disease most frequently studied on a regular basis. More knowledge is being acquired about cancer each year. More information is being gathered about all illnesses and why some people are more prone to certain conditions. Knowledge like this could enable more people avoid contracting cancer in the first place.

Over recent years, concern has been made public over the possibility that our dietary habits may be partly to blame for the incidence of the condition. Foods that could be a problem are Salt, sugar, saturated fat and cholesterol. Recent studies have shown that calcium received from dairy products can be harmful to men and could encourage the onset of prostate cancer.

Cancer does not have any prejudice when it comes to invading a person's body as it can strike anywhere. The problem is that it can also be insidious and a person may have it for some time before it is diagnosed. Cures for many types have advanced in recent years and are more likely to be successful if the cancer is found in its early stages. For those people diagnosed with cancer, my heart goes out to them and their families; however, the constant research is paying off and the life expectancy of cancer victims is increasing all the time.

There is a great resource that I have found that shows methods of treating cancer naturally, you can see it at: http://www.cancer-natural-treatments.info there is a lot of helpful information there.

act now and it will save your life!!!

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei,South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961.

After the banning of the ANC in 1960, Nelson Mandela argued for the setting up of a military wing within the ANC.In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela's campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC. This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. In 1963, when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. His statement from the dock received considerable international publicity. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland.

During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheidmovement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.

Nelson Mandela was released on February 11, 1990. After his release, he plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South Africa after the organization had been banned in 1960, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's National Chairperson.

Task 2: Article Review

Title: E-Learning and the Development of Intercultural Competence

Journal: Language Learning & Technology, September 2006, Volume 10, Number 3

Author: Meei-ling Liaw, National Taichung University

http://llt.msu.edu/vol10num3/liaw/

Summary

This study aims to presents the findings of the efficacy of an online learning environment developed consist of articles on different cultures within the subjects to encourage EFL students’ intercultural competencies. Two e-referencing tools were made available in the system while students were reading and writing. Furthermore, an e-forum was created to help the students involved in communicating with speakers from the target language itself. There are no specific subjects in the research were stated except that the online learning environment was created for EFL students. The findings showed that all EFL participants were able to communicate fluently in the target language without much help from corpora-based e-referencing tools provided in the system. The usage of online dictionary decreased radically after the first two readings. The online concordancer, instead of being used for learning different kinds of cultural meaning on the levels of lexical, syntactic, and textual organization as originally intended, was used by the students to link to articles of similar topics for further explorations of culture and language learning opportunities. Despite some technical complications with the computers, the collaboration between the two groups of students was successful, as can be seen from the positive and complimentary comments from the participants. The students’ e-forum entries demonstrated four types of intercultural competences: (A) interest in knowing other people’s way of life and introducing one’s own culture to others, (B) ability to change perspective, (C) knowledge about one’s own and others’ culture for intercultural communication, and (D) knowledge about intercultural communication processes.

Reaction

In the first place, this research article was impressive in terms of the ideas because nowadays, the online learning is something that can help bolster the opportunities for students to interact in authentic way especially for EFL students who might have to wait for a long time to get a chance to speak to the real native speaker of the target language. Plus the teaching of culture is essential in the language leaning. By using the cross cultural factor as a stimulator to get the students motivated to learn as to encourage their interest in knowing about others’ culture might be helpful in language learning. Meanwhile, although the idea was a good thing, one part that spoils the research was there was no specific subject stated in the research article. This was something that might be confusing to some reader especially for reviewing. It can be improved by having the subjects stated and the arrangement of the article can be enhanced. In my point of view, this method is a stunning idea to get the students’ attention in learning the target language. The exchange of cultural knowledge among the participants involved will generate a kind of interesting surroundings in the learning process of the target language. Giving the spaces provided by the developer, the students will be able to communicate effectively with people from other culture and thus they have benefited from the learning process, which help them to be more open minded towards certain issues. From the platform also, it will surely help the participants to look at an issue in different view; means view of other people from other cultural. By means, it can contribute to the increasing value of cultural competence among the participants. I believe that this method is very suitable to be implemented in our country as a whole. Obviously that unity is very essential part in Malaysia, and this platform might help in generating unity among the participants involved, regarding that the citizen in this country are from different cultural background.

about me....

wahhh...it feels like iam in space whenever iam in front of the computer. this was kind of interesting..

hye there, my name is hamzi qayyum bin khairiri..people call me hamzi and sometimes qayyum..i have lots of interests in mechanical stuff like engines. i have a few experience in racing and stuff and brought home the national scooter prix home with me..

the first thing that appeared in my mind is that, why didnt the faculty introduce this subject before our practicum.heeee...since i have learnt to use the J's, heheh, the hot potato thing, i was so interested and found that teaching can be very interesting with these softwares..as for my school students, they were even happy to even get hold of the mouse and start clicking. this is like a new environment for them in classrooms.

well, setting up a blog was kind of fun. at first, i didnt even know what is a blog..as they used to appear in the tv's and radio's, people getting charged of misusing these blogs to post negative political stuffs. that is why i did not have any interests in these blogs.

when dr izaham introduced it, it was a stepping stone..hehehhe..

from my experience, since i was in the first semester, i have learned many types of softwares such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Windows Movie Maker...these are for our classroom use especially in presentations and assignments...

about computer hardwares, i know how to install the motherboard, rams and all other plug and play stuff such as the pc card, graphic card and ets..in my opinion is the setting of the compatibility of the gadgets, which the guy in lowyat thaught me..heheheh..he's a pakistani..

in the internet activities, i often browse facebook as it is a must..eee..and music and video downloading.it is easy to look for the song that you love and start downloading it..it once came to my mind, it is much easier and cheaper to get these songs from the internet then going to a store and buying a cd which will cost you at least 42 ringgit..u can still burn it to a cd and listen to it anywhere as long as the format iw compatible.dr, can that be called as piracy as well? kind of confusing..sometimes i go for online games and use the internet for information regarding to any matter.

computers, computers, computers!!!it facinates me..somehow, in my practicum, i have brought my students to the school lab for quite a few times. it was for movies and our essay class. i had also used a software from longman for my students and these softwares really caught their attention. better attention span i guess..and the class was so noisy and they were busy with their application like taggered, facebook and myspace..

whew..it was interesting though.

so then, till here..will be posting more if i have the idea and instructions..hehehehlaaaaa..dada.
